Gifts to sew! 7 ideas to DIY

The holidays are almost upon us and if you’re anything like me you’ve been thinking about what you can sew to give away to your loved ones this year. Handmade gifts are always appreciated and it’s also a great opportunity to use that fabric you’ve been hoarding... 😝 here are some tips to get that creativity going! ✨🎄

1. Oven mitts! This was my gift sewing choice last year and it was so much fun to make them! And a every useful and appreciated gift. I used retro fabric scraps and quilted them using 2 layers of heat proof batting to make them safe to use with heat. I used this free pattern from See Kate Sew

2. Large hot pads! Casserole pads. This is also a super useful gift to sew, using the same materials as you used for the oven mittens. I used this tutorial. I gave one of these to my parents last year and they use it almost every day!

3. A quiet book! This is a cute gifts for babies and toddlers. I want to make one for my daughter (she will be 1.5 this Christmas). Use scrap materials you already have and get creative! There are some great ideas in Pinterest. I’ve created a board with inspiration.

4. Toiletry bags! Cute project that many will enjoy to receive. Also super fun to sew! I’ve sewn so many toiletry bags, I actually used to sew these to sell, now I only give them away as gifts. Here's a nice tutorial I used to make one for my little brother last year! I made it in a brown fabric I quilted and I used a blue checked fabric for the inside. Turned out so good!

5. Laptop Sleeve! You only need to know which size laptop the gift receiver has and you’re good to go. Use leftover fabrics, create a quilted fabric using a few different scraps etc. Im excited to make one for myself too! 😜 Here's a free tutorial.

6. Scrunchies! Quick and easy project. Create a set of a few different scrunchies for a “meatier” gift. I have a free scrunchie pattern here. You could even package them nicely by adding a few to a piece of craft paper/carton paper.

7. Pot holders! Make them in the same fabric as the hot pad or oven mitt for a cute set. Here's a tutorial for scrappy quilt pot holders that would make a great gift!
