Designing a Collection: Part 1 – The Concept
I’ve decided to design a small, intentional collection — using only fabrics I already have.
And I thought it would be fun to share the entire process with you. I will share my thought process and each step along the way so you can follow along and design your own mini collection alongside me as well. This project isn’t about chasing trends or adding more clothes to my wardrobe. It’s about slowing down, being intentional, and truly enjoying the process of designing and sewing garments that I’ll actually wear.
Since becoming a mom, both my body and my style have changed... I can't wear most of my old me-mades anymore... and I don't want to buy fast fashion. So I've been thrifting but now I want to create a good foundation of mix and match pieces that are perfectly curated to my lifestyle, body and current style.
My Constraints
To keep this project focused and creative, I’m setting a few clear rules for myself:
-
Fabrics: I can only use what I already have in my stash. No new purchases. This forces me to be creative and helps me see my stash in a new light.
-
Number of pieces: The collection will be small, just a few garments that can mix and match.
-
Function: Every piece should work for my real life, my days working from home, at work, and dropping off at kindergarten.
-
Style: I’ll build everything around a mood board and make sure it feels like a collection with intention, not just random pieces.
These limitations are part of the fun. Constraints fuel creativity, and this way, I know every choice will be intentional.
My Why
I want to prove that fashion can be slow, personal, and deeply fulfilling.
That you can be your own designer, even as a hobby sewist, making pieces that fit your body, your lifestyle, and your values.
Creating a wardrobe you love isn’t about sewing more, but sewing better.
In this series, I’ll take you through my entire process, from concept to finished collection, so you can follow along and maybe even start your own slow fashion journey.
In part 2, I’ll be showing you my fabric selection, inspiration and more.
